Push-Pull Dynamometers
Push-pull dynamometers, as with other dynamometers, measure tension or force that is being applied. A push forceis measured when the force is applied against a pad. A pull force is measured when the force is pulled against a hook or other attachment apparatus. Both give important muscle strength testing information and are used to screen a subject’s strength against a norm or specified criteria for a specific work task (Job Task Analysis and Functional Capacity Analysis). Push-pull dynamometer data is also used for comparison of strength of dominant side vs. non-dominant side to determine the extent of impairment as well as progression of strength overtime to evaluate the effectiveness of therapy interventions.
In the workforce and in daily living activities we encounter a myriad of physical tasks that require heavy objects to be manually pushed or pulled. It is these types of activities that place varying degrees of mechanical force on the tissues of our bodies and can lead to musculoskeletal injury and the associated loss of time, manpower, and yield expensive medical bills.
Where are Push-Pull Dynamometers Used
- University research labs: The need to obtain objective and precise force measurements when evaluating the impact of equipment or specific activities on the human musculoskeletal system in the determination of risk.
- Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and chiropractic clinics. Used to evaluate strength deficits resulting from anatomical injury or disease and to monitor progression overtime from therapeutic exercise protocols.
- Hospitals: Use is similar to those in therapy clinics but can also be used to determine discharge for specific pathologies.
