Traction Tables & Units
Traction tables to treat herniated discs, degenerative discs, sciatica by creating a longitudinal separation and decompression of the spine.
Physical Therapy Traction tables/units produce a force counter-force pulling mechanism via a rope/cord and various halters and straps, with the force of the pull being provided by a weight and pulley system, a pneumatic system, or a hydraulic system. The traction force creates a longitudinal gliding motion separation of the spinal segments (cervical or lumbar) to relieve pressure and compression on nerve roots, to reduce pain and alleviate the signs and symptoms of cervical or lumbar compression or impingement caused by herniated discs, bulging discs, sciatica, segmental muscle spasming, or other occlusion events of the intervertebral foramina. Symptoms can include pain, neurological deficits, strength deficits, or reduced mobility.
The believed mechanisms of the pulling force that produce the favorable reduction in pain or deficits may be accomplished by:
- Stretching the facet joint capsules for increased spinal segment mobility and alignment
- Opening up the intervertebral foramen of the respective spinal segments increasing the space for nerve root exiting
- Elongation and relaxation of muscle tissue for decreased muscle guarding and spasming
- Reducing intravertebral disc pressure to create a pull of the nucleus pulposus back into the disc
- Improving circulation to the intervertebral discus and surrounding soft tissues via osmosis produced by a reduced intradiscal pressure
