Stethoscope

In general, a stethoscope is used to listen to sounds originating from inside the body, such as heart sounds, breathing or lung sounds, arterial blood flow, heart valve actions, and even intestinal sounds. A small disc-shaped resonator located in the diaphragm of the head that is placed against the skin, amplifies the internal sounds, and carries them through flexible rubber tubing to metal ear tubes and out through the earpieces into the medical personnel’s auditory canal.

What Can a Stethoscope Assess?

• A stethoscope is often used in conjunction with a manual sphygmomanometer to measure blood pressure and collective these two instruments constitute a blood pressure (BP) kit.
• Breathing sounds during inspiration and expiration – a practice known as auscultation – including abnormal lung sounds such as stridor, rhonchi, wheezes, and rales as well as the characteristics of those sounds like pitch, quality, and loudness.
