There are a variety of sensory tools designed to help a therapist assess an individual’s response to various stimuli. An example is a monofilament sensory device that tests tactile sensitivity of a patient’s skin in various parts of the body such as hand, foot, and face.

One basis for such testing is to evaluate the integrity of nerve root sensory patterns called dermatomes as well as peripheral nerve cutaneous distribution patterns.

 For example, a dermatome is a patch of skin that is innervated by sensory fibers from a specific nerve root level (i.e., C5). Sensory evaluation tools help assess the presence or absence of sensation in the dermatome skin area, as well as the different types of sensation such as the sensitivity to different touch sensations such discriminate and non-discriminate.
