Anatomical models of the foot – for teaching, training, demonstration and understanding of the unique structural weight bearing support and locomotion characteristics of the foot for use in medical, healthcare, and educational settings
The foot is comprised of 28 bones (7 tarsal bones, 5 metatarsal bones, 14 phalanges of the toes, and 2 sesamoid bones on the plantar surface of the big toe), 33 joints (9 ginglymus, 5 condyloidal, 19 arthrodial – intertarsal, intermetatarsal, and tarsometacarpal), over 100 ligaments, one plantar fascia, and multiple intrinsic and extrinsic muscles acting on the joints of the foot. Its design enables the foot to support the entire weight of the human body, absorb the forces of walking, running, jumping, and landing, enable push-off for propulsion, and adapt to changing surfaces to maintain balance.
A unique characteristic of the foot is the Windlass Mechanism. Its design enables the foot to become a rigid and stable structure during “push-off” so we do not lose force in unnecessary movements of the foot. When the windlass mechanism is not engaged, the foot is more supple and can better absorb the force of “heel strike” for a smoother contact with the ground.
ProHealthcareProducts.com offers skeletal foot models with ligaments only, or with ligaments and muscles, and those presenting certain pathologies of the foot.
